Burmese Protests

The British Broadcasting Corporation has been giving a good amount of coverage on recent happenings in Burma. Recently, the government increased the price of fuel, oil, and deisel by 2-5 times. In response to this, citizens protested. One paceful protest was subdued by armed Burmese government militants. Now, monks are protesting for peace, and are preaching against the government and leading the protesters. More recently, another group of people were shot at by Burmese militants and a Japanese man was killed.

A civil war would seem to be coming up in Burma. In is interesting to compare the actions of different cultures in response to difference. In the Middle East, bloodshed and fighting would seem to be the ultimate end. In Burma, however, peaceful protesters voice their opinions in spite of the oppressive government. If the Burmese happenings do not escalate to mutual, physical, conflict, it could mean several things. On one hand, it could mean that the government has succeeded in imposing fear and obedience on its people. On the other hand, if a comprimise is reached without a war, it would be more than just a deal between the people and the government. Such a comprimise would symbolize the rise of a more peaceful, sophisticared human race. If both sides recognize the consqeunces of violent proceedings, then perhaps there is hope for more smooth future comprimises in the world. Burma would be setting a good example for the rest of the world, and maybe everyone would see their own conflicts in a different light. Except those Chinese communist dogs. Just kidding.

Old and New Questions for my Bloggers

Ok-Now that we have ALMOST figured this out . . . you have two questions to reply to.
1) What will you miss most about summer and what do you look forward to the most in the new school year (slight change since it is almost October!)?

and

2) What news story (stories) have grabbed your attention most recently and why?

You may choose to respond privately. Just type your answer in Word or your folder and print it.

All responses are due-either as a blog or a print out-by the end of class Friday.

Happy Writing!
Mrs. G

PS-I want you all to click on the "comments" box and respond. Do not create your own post this time. Be sure to resend your reply IF you answered on your own blog instead of HERE.

News Story

One topic in the news that has caught my eye recently is the housing market at the moment. The price of houses have continued to fall at a rapid rate, making it a buyers market, and giving a terrible position to the seller. This is great for some one who is looking to buy a house, but it is very bad for the seller and the realtor. Realtor's across the country are losing their jobs, and the one's who still have their jobs are not making relatively close to what they used to. This is also leading into the increasing rate of foreclosures on home's across America. This is a huge problem for any family across the country, including single parent families, and the lowerclass's trying to make ends meet as it is. The people labeled as "High Risk Borrower's" are the one's who are going first, this in turn will lead to a chain of event's in which the bank's and mortgage companies will eventually lose in the end. This is because of the value of the houses, which most often go up, but will not get even close to it's value from the buyer because of the rapidly decreasing price of housing. Although law makers are trying to straighten this problem out, it is up to the mortgage companies and banks to see it through and get things not back to normal, but in a stronger, less vulnerable position, in which it could never happen again.

Mahmoud Amedinejad

The Iranian president, Mahmoud Amedinejad, spoke today in New York. Based on the absence of details about his speech, nothing he said during it was ground breaking. Apparently, however, he believes that the holocaust is a myth and Israel should be wiped off the map.

Call me a traitor, but personally, I like this man. Don't get me wrong, I think he is full of... But he is uniting the American people in a way our president couldn't. If we can't love together, at least we can hate together (The American way). Despite the fact that some people are still taking this and somehow depicting it as some evil plan of such and such a political party, most of the Americans seem to hate this man. I don't like what Amedinejad stands for, but I like what he unintentionally causes (Partially): A bonding of Americans, a highlighting of what remains of American nationalism. Besides the whole unifying thing, he has a cool first name. Come on. Mahmoud.

It was interesting to see some of the signs protesting his speech in New York.

The fact that he has an entourage including his own personnal ambulance is saying something.
