First they came for...

(I was absent due to that theatre feildtrip, and that is why this blog is later than others in the class.)


No one should be treated with disrespect because they are different. The minority is always picked on, while the majority stands there on the sidelines laughing, or doing nothing at all. This is wrong. Obviously the people that do the bulling are in the wrong, but so are those that don't try to make it right.


Atticus Finch, in To Kill A Mockingbird was an amazing character that stood up for the underdog. He supported Tom Robinson, a black man, in a case of law and defended him as he would have any white man. He believed in his heart that Tom Robinson was not guilty, and that he did not rape Mayella Ewell. At this time, in the south, this was unheard of. Atticus was treated differently all throughout town. People called him names, people gossiped about his morals, people bullyed his children, and one person even spat in his face. And why? Because he was doing what was right? Yes, they disrespected Atticus Finch for doing the right thing because it was an unheard-of thing as well. And although Atticus Finch was fictional, he was a great man for everything he did, and I definatly look up to him.


Another character that stood up for the underdog was Cherry Valance in The Outsiders. Cherry Valance stood up for Ponyboy and Johnny when her jock boyfriend was making fun of them after the movies. Then later that night, in self defense Johnny killed her boyfriend. She still stood up for them, claiming she would support Johnny in court saying it was for self defense, and she even gave the Greasers information about the Soc's before their rumble. She wasn't the biggest hero, but it still was good of her to break from her group and realize that just because the Greasers were from the other side of town (the poor side), there were some very nice people, and some others. Just like the rich Soc's...there were some nice people and then there were some bad ones. There were people that looked down on her for befriending the Greasers, but it made her a better person in the end.
